Why 1-on-1 works for English
A child who will not read aloud in class will read aloud to one patient adult who is not going to laugh and is not in a hurry. That is most of the problem solved, and it cannot be done in a group.
Writing is the same. A teacher sitting with one child can see the sentence stall as it is being written and ask the one question that unsticks it — which is a different job from marking it afterwards and writing “develop further” in the margin.
